The whole organic food craze can get a little confusing. A little confusing and a little expensive. We always ask ourselves, ‘Does my food really need to be organic?’ The answer is sometimes yes, and sometimes, not necessarily. The firm answer comes down to a food’s pesticide count. Remember pesticides are the chemicals farms use to make the food last longer, which sounds like a good deal, but not really good for your health or the planet. Here is a list of foods you should ALWAYS buy organic:

  • Apples
  • Blueberries
  • Celery
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Grapes
  • Hot peppers
  • Imported nectarines
  • Imported snap peas
  • Peaches
  • Potatoes
  • Spinach
  • Strawberries
  • Sweet peppers

And the produce that you don’t have to buy organic. These are also known as the “Clean 15″ having the lowest pesticide load:

  • Asparagus
  • Avocados
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Domestic cantaloupe
  • Eggplant
  • Frozen sweet peas
  • Grapefruit
  • Kiwi
  • Mangoes
  • Onions
  • Papayas
  • Pineapples
  • Sweet corn
  • Sweet potatoes

If you’re up for it, try growing your own produce! It can be a fun activity for the family and you’ll guarantee you’re eating the healthiest food possible.
