Tigers shut out Angels


The Detroit Tigers win at the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 3-0 to avoid a sweep in their three-game series.

Detroit opened the score in the fifth inning. SS Jose Iglesias hit a one-out double and came home on an RBI-single by 2B Ian Kinsler.

The Tigers scored their second run the sixth inning. They loaded the bases with a ground-rule double from 1B Victor Martinez, a single from 3B Nick Castellanos and a one-out single by CF Cameron Maybin.

C Jarrod Saltalamacchia followed with a single to right center field and drove in Victor Martinez for the 2-0 lead.

In the ninth inning the Tigers loaded the bases again with one out and back-to-back-to-back walks to Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Jose Iglesias and Ian Kinsler.

With RF J.D. Martinez at the plate SS Gregorio Petit committed a fielding error, allowing Jarrod Saltalamacchia to score Detroit’s third run.

CL Francisco Rodriguez pitched a hitless ninth inning to earn his 15th save of the season. He posts a 3.60 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP this season.

Detroit’s SP Michael Fulmer (5-1) had a no-hitter going through 6 2/3 innings. He wound up pitching 7.2 innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. His ERA and WHIP improved to 3.24 and 1.22, respectively.

Angels SP Matt Shoemaker (3-6) pitched 7 innings, giving up 10 hits and 2 earned runs while fanning 8. He now has a 5.50 ERA on the season with a 1.43 WHIP.

The Detroit Tigers (25-27) host the New York Yankees (24-28) tomorrow before playing a three-game home series against the Chicago White Sox (29-25) from Friday to Sunday.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (24-29) travel to the Pittsburgh Pirates (29-23) to play a three-game series from Friday through Sunday.
