San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is refusing to stand for the American Flag during the national anthem before NFL games. Kaepernick feels the need to make a political statement and of course get some publicity.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told Steve Wyche of NFL Media. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
“This is not something that I am going to run by anybody,” Kaepernick said. “I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. . . . If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.”
In one sense I commend Colin Kaepernick for taking a stand (well not standing) for what he believes in. But mostly I am mad that Kaepernick is disrespecting the American Flag and this country. If Kaepernick wants to do something productive how about offering some discourse on the problems in this country rather than pouting during the national anthem. I have to wonder if Kaepernick would have made this move when he was a starter and had endorsements.
