Fashion Beyond The Ballpark

gameday_looks-660x400With 162 games in a baseball season (yeah, that’s per team), it’s pretty likely that you may find yourself heading to the ballpark in the coming months. My uniform consists of cutoffs, Chuck Taylors, a white tee, and a baseball hat. But perhaps you’re planning on hitting the town after? Here are three easy looks that seamlessly transition out of the park. I may even try ‘em this season!

1denim

1. Flared denim, tucked in tee, belt, wedges
I am loving the ’70s look and denim totally fits the ballpark. Tuck in a white tee and polish the look with a skinny belt and comfy, neutral wedges. No one will even see that you’re rockin’ heels because your flares will hide them. Grab a light cardigan just in case it cools off.

Nation Classic V Neck
Rag & Bone Holly Belt
Stuart Weitzman Minx wedges
Velvet Jackie cardigan

BlackPants

2. Black track pants, tank, sweater and booties
If you’re feeling a little more edgy, throw on a pair of track pants, tuck in a tank, and finish with a cool bootie. This look is casual enough for the park but will have you on the receiving end of compliments all night at the bar. Drape the sweater over your shoulders till you’re chilly.

J Brand Shanan sweater
Ash Jalouse suede boots

DressJacket

3. Sundress and denim or leather jacket, sandals
Don’t be afraid to rock a dress to a baseball game. If you’re lucky enough to live in a warm climate, you’ll be so comfortable in a breezy cotton dress and sandals. Bring along a leather jacket to dress it up for a post-game dinner.

Beauty Beginners: The Smart Girl’s Guide to Lipstick

Welcome to the second installment of Beauty Beginners, a series where I’ll be sharing my beginner-friendly, fundamental beauty routines. In my last post I laid down the basics for finding the best foundation for your skin type.  Not only is that post a good refresher for our beauty gurus out there, but it’s also a solid start for those who aren’t as confident in the makeup department. Similar to applying flawless foundation, lipstick can be a bit tricky. Today I’ll be taking you through my foolproof guide to finding your perfect lipstick…

Finding The Best Lipstick For Your Complexion

Unfortunately not all shades complement every skin tone. Red lipstick alone has such a wide variety! Complexions vary just as much as lipstick shades, so my advice is to always test colors against your skin before you make a decision. If your skin has more of a pink undertone, I suggest trying cool-based colors while darker complexions pair well with warmer, coral hues. I also mix reds all the time to come up with my own custom shade.

How to Decide Between Satin, Matte, or Gloss

Lipsticks come in a variety of textures, so how do you decide between them all? It’s great if you already have a personal preference, but for beauty newcomers my advice is to test away. I usually wear a subtle, neutral gloss for daytime and reserve bold satins and mattes for going out. Bold is beautiful, just remember that upkeep is key! If you prefer something more subtle, tinted balms and lip glosses should do the trick.

Drugstore vs. Department Store

While it’s true that paying top dollar for quality lipsticks is worth it, drugstores have some hidden gems. Buying lipstick at your local drugstore allows you to test colors and textures without breaking the bank.

Application Tips

With lipstick, moisture is everything. Chapped lips can ruin the perfect pout, so prior to application I recommend making sure your lips are both exfoliated and moisturized. Once my lips are prepped I usually opt to define my lips with liner in a similar shade to my desired lipstick. Follow the natural shape of your lips making sure to stay inside the lines (you don’t want to look like you belong in the circus!). Tip: After you’ve fully applied your lipstick, lightly blot your lips with a tissue for a polished, even look. This will also lessen the chance of you getting lipstick all over your teeth!

Be sure to have your lipstick on hand for any midday (or night) touch-ups! I hope you find these tips helpful.

What are some of your favorite lipsticks?

Shopping List: Our Top 10 Spring Trends

We don’t know about you, but spring has really triggered something inside us that has us ready to shop. Every girl knows how thrilling yet dangerous a shopping itch can be, and we can’t deny that we’ve been bitten by the retail bug. Hard. Now, we know that when said bite occurs, the most practical thing to do is to make a list of the items you really want to spend your hard-earned money on that season. The hope is that when you have a list in mind, you’ll focus on purchasing quality pieces you really want or need. But, of course there’s always room for an impulsive splurge once in a while (don’t you agree!?).

With spring shopping in mind, we scoured one of our favorite shopping sites Zappos COUTURE and made a list of our must-have items for this season. It was no easy feat—Zappos COUTURE has seemingly limitless options of handbags, heels and flirty spring dresses. But narrow it down, we did (with a little help from the Lux Report, Zappos COUTURE’s online editorial destination). For those of you who aren’t familiar with Zappos COUTURE, it’s an online boutique where you can find the most stylish clothes and accessories at amazing prices. This online shopping destination also offers professional style picks from top buyers and fashion experts, reports on emerging trends and helps you find incredible prices on designer pieces.

Shopping List: The Top Spring Trends

1. Furla Candy Bon Bon Mini Crossbody
, $148
The cool mint color of this ladylike satchel is just what the doctor ordered this season. Handbags with top handles are all the rage right now, and we love the glossy finish on this purse.

2. SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker Holly Sandal, $220
We have a soft spot for anything rose gold. And these sweet, scalloped sandals are no exception. Two-strap pool slides like the ones above are easy to slip on and they look incredibly chic with distressed boyfriend jeans or your favorite bikini cover-up.

3. SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker Margaret Heels, $355
Radiant orchid, the color of 2014, is a hue that’s still going strong this season. We love the feminine little bows and the pretty straps on these soles. And pointy toes are on-trend right now, too.

4. Kate Spade New York Le Pavillion Case, $40
What girl doesn’t love polka dots? Especially ones that are metallic gold… This Kate Spade phone case will dress up your tech to the nines this spring.

5. See by Chloe L/S Dress, $595
Tennis court chic was one of our favorite looks on the runway this past September, and this dress is the perfect mix of ladylike and sporty. The black and cream color palette, the drop-waist ruffled silhouette and the long sleeves make it an A+ dress in our book.

6. Michael Kors Collection Brilliance Pave X Ring, $65
In the jewelry world, the trends have turned from big statement pieces to more delicate baubles. Think tiny earrings, thinly stacked rings, and dainty chain necklaces. This pave X ring from Michael Kors is a great everyday piece and will go with pretty much any other jewelry you pair with it.

7. See by Chloe Rosita Cross Body Bag, $310

Pastels have all the power this spring, and we have blush tones at the forefront of our minds at the moment. This blush cross body chain strap purse comes in the perfect pink color and can be worn with everything from denim to nautical stripes.

8. Michael Kors Collection Burnett Heels, $395
If you’ve been keeping up with fashion blogs and magazines, you know that mules have been in for a few seasons now. For spring, these camel-colored soles are a closet staple. Plus, you can wear them well into the summer and beyond!

9. RED VALENTINO Cotton Jersey Tee, $195
Nautical-inspired pieces are big this spring (as they almost always are), and this sophisticated tee shirt is right on-trend. Wear it with denim shorts, a navy blue pencil skirt, or your favorite pair of white jeans.

10. Elizabeth and James Vogel Pave Studs, $150
Just as we said earlier, dainty, delicate jewelry is on the horizon this season. These gorgeous studs by Elizabeth and James have a unique shape and will add a pretty little bit of sparkle to your ears.

Style Guide: 12 Budget-Friendly Floral Must-Haves

Style Guide: 12 Budget-Friendly Floral Must-Haves

Hi ladies, with winter quickly becoming a distant memory, the layers are lighter, the palettes are fresher, and the season of floral fever is officially in bloom. Botanical prints have long been a seasonal staple, so adding new flowery frocks to your closet is always a safe bet when it comes to navigating your way through springtime trends. From preppy, light-hued florals to bohemian black-based pieces, there’s a wide range of flowery prints to match your personal style and satisfy your floral appetite. To help narrow the search for your next great floral find, I’ve collected some of my favorite pieces, all available for under $100…

White-Based Floral Prints:

Style Guide: 12 Budget-Friendly Floral Must-Haves
sweater – j. crew, skirt – lulu*s, necklace – target, handbag – ted baker (similar here), heels – shoedazzle

When it comes to florals, I’ve always preferred white-based prints. They’re classic, feminine and full of color, which make them easy to style. Pretty much any piece that possesses these bright and airy prints has the power to be a springtime hero piece. When styling your white-based prints, keep it simple and go with a solid colored separate that pulls from one of the shades in your floral design.

pastel floral trousers – re:named ($62), floral moto jacket – piperlime collection ($90), cap-sleeve floral dress – modcloth ($70)

Black-Based Floral Prints:

Style Guide: 12 Budget-Friendly Floral Must-Haves
top – target, floral vest – lulu*s, denim – parker smith, ankle boots – sam edelman, handbag – shoedazzle

Unlike the overtly feminine white-based floral prints, black-based florals have the ability to actually be kind of gritty. Think less “Garden Party” and more “Boho Barbeque”. Expect to see lots of these prints trotting through the dessert during festival season. When it comes to accessorizing your black-based florals, use this rare opportunity to make your flower prints edgy by adding a vintage denim jacket, a studded cross-body bag, or fringe ankle boots.

Style Guide: 12 Budget-Friendly Floral Must-Haves

coat – j.o.a, top – gb gianni bini, necklace – j. crew, pants – lonny’s (similar here), heels – shoedazzle

Floral prints aren’t restricted to just garments, so if you’re weary of this bold design, try starting small with flower appliques and laser cut floral printed accessories. For a subtle start, try adding a simple floral handbag with your go-to little black dress.

Tripping: How to Nail a Spring Break Vacation

There you are: sitting on your couch, clad in pajamas, flicking through your Instagram feed full of beachy, margarita-fueled images while a marathon of “Say Yes to the Dress” flickers comfortingly in the background.

You are the spring breaker left behind.

I’ve been this girl a few times, and I’m here to let you know, there is life on the other side. While you may feel like the only undergrad in the world who’s not getting her hair braided on the beaches of Mexico, there’s actually a whole legion of us—the left behind—and we’re in this together. Okay?

Okay, good. Now, here’s how to make this spring break staycation so awesome you won’t even envy those pesky poolside photos…

  1. Pamper Yourself
Nothing sets the vacation mood faster than a relaxing at-home spa day. Dim the lights, light some candles, break out your fluffiest bathrobe, turn on your favorite mellow playlist and let the zen begin. Start with a long bath—or steamy shower—then follow up with a facemask to boost your complexion. If you’re looking for a DIY recipe to try, check out our recipes for a Strawberry Rose and Bananas & Cream or Avocado Face Mask. Follow up with a pretty spring manicure and you’ll be feeling fresh and gorgeous in minutes.
  2. Sip Something Fun
Let’s be honest—whether you’re in Las Vegas, Miami, or any spring break destination in between, one of the best parts of the festivities is the fun party cocktails. If you feel like you’re missing out on the festive sips, why not recreate your cocktail of choice at home? Invite a pal over (or don’t, because alone time rules), break out your best glassware and try a new recipe, like Infused Lemonade, Homemade Coconut Horchata or Watermelon Lime Agua Fresca.
  3. Check Out
It’s not often that a girl is given permission to totally disconnect from the obligations and stress of everyday life, so take this as an opportunity to get offline and get inspired. Often times, when you give your brain a little room to breathe, the best ideas will float to the surface. Case in point—have you ever noticed how your most amazing ideas come to you when you’re in the shower or tuning out on the freeway? It’s because you’ve given yourself space to think without distraction, which is a hard thing to do when your iPhone is glued to your palm. Reset your energy and make time for a long stroll, a nap outdoors, a trip to your local museum or anything else that quiets, focuses, and inspires your mind.
  4. Fake a Glow
Let’s be real: It may be annoying when your pals come back from their tropical cruise with perfectly sunkissed skin. Since you’re wise enough to refrain from actually tanning your precious epidermis, why not fake your glow like a pro? I’m a longtime fan of Kate Somerville’s Tanning Towelettes,  which are super easy to use and always produce a natural looking glow.An insider tip to remember: Once you’ve applied your tanner all over, lather a light layer of lotion around your wrists, ankles, elbows, the backs of your knees and underarms. This dilutes the color slightly in these areas that naturally appear lighter on your body, making your tan look more natural.
  5. Do Something Outside Your Comfort Zone
One of the best parts about vacation is the sense of excitement you get from being somewhere totally unknown. Recreate this sensation by challenging yourself to do at least one thing outside of your comfort zone during your staycation. Whether that’s taking your first Zumba class, trying a new type of cuisine, or going to the movies alone for the first time, doing something novel is a great way to feel like you’ve had a robust vacation. Plus, it gives you a great story to tell when you’re inevitably asked, “What did you do over break?”

Have you ever enjoyed a staycation before? How did you make the most of it?

Must-Have Pieces For 2015

A Denim Skirt

Denim on denim (aka the Canadian Tuxedo) is back in a big way this year, and so is the denim skirt! Talk about a foolproof trend. The trick though, is to wear two shades of denim that are fairly similar but different. Or try pairing your skirt with a floral blouse or pocket tee. Super cute, easy breezy!

Flared Pants

Bell bottom everything! Fabric, denim, patterned, solid.. whatever! It’s in. Pair your flares with cropped knit top (like above) or a peasant top for daytime, or try a leather jacket and heels for a night out look!

Peasant Top

I have to admit this isn’t my favorite of the big looks for this year. Peasant tops aren’t always flattering on me because I have a bit of a larger chest. BUT I’m still gonna try to pull it off here and there. The key, I find, is to make sure the pants you’re wearing are VERY fitted (try some suede short shorts or tight bell bottoms) and you definitely want to wear heels or heeled booties to elongate your legs. Otherwise, this can look like the ultimate frumpy mom outfit.

Fringe everything

My favorite trend of the year: fringe. You can’t really go wrong with this. Fringe looks great on purses, shoes, jackets, skirts… you name it! The one thing I’d say here is stick to a leather or suede fringe… I’m not as into the tassel-y, fancy fringe. It’s all about the laid-back, Woodstock-goer. If you’re going to buy anything off this list, fringe should be it.

Wide-brimmed hat

To go with your bell bottoms or just about anything else. The hat of 2015 is a floppy, wide-brimmed, hippie hat — which will be extra awesome come this year’s festival season because we could all use a little extra sun protection!!

Thigh high boots & a bell sleeve dress or romper

This look is so automatically sexy, it will 100% be my go-to day or night for a while to come. Grab a staple pair of thigh-high boots and pair it with any short romper or dress, really. The bell-sleeve is particularly trendy this year and adds an extra feminine touch to the look. LOVE IT!!!
